Turning 50 is a beautiful milestone—and a perfect time to make self-care a priority. But what works best to keep us feeling vibrant and energized at this stage in life? As a woman in my 50s, I know how crucial self-care is, especially when we’re balancing life’s many demands with less energy to meet them. Here, I’ll share some holistic self-care tips that nurture both mind and body while supporting metabolic health. And if you're looking to take your wellness journey to the next level, don't miss my free Metabolism Makeover video at the end!

1. Prioritize Deep, Restful Sleep

After 50, quality sleep is essential for energy and mental clarity. Try creating a relaxing bedtime routine—avoid screens an hour before bed, wind down with a warm tea, or meditate to prepare your mind and body for restful sleep. Aim for 8½ to 9 hours if you can; eight hours is just an average, and some of us may need more! Deep sleep helps regulate hormones, supports weight management, and keeps brain fog at bay. One of my favorite ways to unwind before bed is coloring in an adult coloring book; if you haven’t tried it yet, you might be surprised at how relaxing it can be.

2. Stay Hydrated with Electrolyte Support

Hydration is key for energy and mental clarity, yet it’s easy to overlook. Aim for about ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight (for example, a 150-pound person would drink 75 ounces daily). Remember, fluids with caffeine can cause us to lose sodium, which may require replenishment. Consider adding natural electrolytes like unsweetened coconut water or a pinch of sea salt to boost hydration. Often, we mistake thirst for hunger—so when you feel tired or hungry, reach for water or electrolytes before a snack. Hydrating first can save you unnecessary calories and help you feel more alert.

3. Try Intermittent Fasting to Support Metabolism

Intermittent fasting can be a gentle, effective way to boost metabolism, improve digestion, and balance blood sugar levels. Try starting with a 12-hour fasting window (say, from 7 PM to 7 AM) and gradually work up to longer fasts if it feels good for you. Our free Metabolism Makeover video goes into detail on how fasting can be customized to meet the needs of women over 50.

4. Embrace a Balanced, Healthy Diet

Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods that nourish your body and support metabolism. Load up on lean proteins, leafy greens, healthy fats, and low-glycemic vegetables and fruits to sustain energy levels. Aim to reduce packaged and processed foods; the closer to whole foods, the better. Don’t worry about being perfect—consistency matters most, and your body will thank you.

5. Move Your Body to Build Endurance and Strength

Exercise doesn’t need to be high-impact to be effective. I prefer low-impact HIIT workouts to improve endurance and cardiovascular health, and strength training is key for preserving muscle mass. As women over 50, strong muscles help us stay active, independent, and metabolically healthy. Daily stretching is also essential for flexibility, ensuring you can move comfortably for years to come.

6. Practice Mindfulness to Manage Stress

Mindfulness is a powerful way to keep stress in check, and even a few minutes daily can make a difference. Try meditation, deep breathing, or gratitude journaling—gratitude, after all, is the antidote to worry! These mindfulness practices can help lower cortisol, a hormone linked to stress-related weight gain, particularly around the belly.

7. Connect with a Supportive Community

Self-care also means surrounding yourself with positive connections and community. Join groups of like-minded women who uplift and inspire you; you’ll feel supported and encouraged, knowing you’re not alone on this journey. We truly need each other, especially during this phase of life.
